23rd Infantry, c. 1910.
These two photographs of the same two soldiers in Company L were taken at the same time and place, once in blue dress uniforms and again in khaki field uniforms. The 23rd Infantry had its headquarters at Madison Barracks, N.Y., from 1905 to 1908, but the 3rd Battalion (with Company L) was at Fort Ontario. After duty overseas and in Texas, the regiment went to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., in 1912. I cannot explain the tiny pin(?) on the breast of one of the men in both pictures. I cannot even be sure it is not a piece of dust on the photographer's negatives.
