French and English Ships off China

- According to news from China, the French frigate
Jean d'Arc, under the flag of Admiral
Laguerre, departed on 11 May/29 April from the island of Mavriki and arrived
on 12 June/30 May at Singapore, where there was a division of the English
navy consisting of one frigate, one brig, and two steamships. The French
admiral assumed command of this division and was supposed to depart from
Singapore with it on 16/4 July to meet the English squadron of Admiral Lord
Sterling, already cruising in the north around Shanghai. (Reprinted from
