Translated by Mark Conrad, 2001. Note: Young Ivan Matveevich's date of award for the St. Anne 4th class was 23 December 1853 (the Battle of Sinope was just fought on 11 November, so medals were quick in this case.) Ivan Matveevich's unit at this time was the 42nd Fleet Equipage. (Source: Russkii Invalid.) He was born on 24 December 1830, died on 30 March 1902, and was buried in the Sevastopol north-side cemetery. (Source: Krymskii Nekrolog.)
